ETCHING PROCESS ~ PRINTING

A copper plate is etched for each color.

Ink is applied to the plate with a cardboard.

The excess ink is wiped with a starched cheesecloth called tarlatan. Ink is held on to the plate in etched (rough) areas.

The paper is soaked in a tray of water and removed when the plates are all wiped and ready to print.

The paper is blotted to remove excess water.

Each plate goes through the press with the dampened paper.

Finished prints are taped to wall 1 or 2 days to dry so they will be flat.
